First Week of Sailing

Hempstead Harbor kicked off the summer with a great first week of sailing. After all sailors passed swimming and capsizing drills with flying colors they settled into the boats to dust off old skills and acquire new ones. The week started out hot with a light breeze perfect for beginners and gradually cooled, getting windier as it went on. Our beginner sailors worked on basic safety and boat handling skills while our racing team got back in the groove with some practice races against Sea Cliff's racing fleet. Next week we look forward to sending sailors to both the Western Districts Regatta for Pixels, Lasers and 420s at Sea Cliff and Shelter Island Regatta for Optimists at Shelter Island Yacht Club. I would like to take this opportunity to remind those interested in sailing in a regatta this summer to register you child in the JSA database (link can be found to the right). Enjoy your Fourth of July and some pictures from this week!
